Course Introduction

You can now obtain your National Senior Certificate (Matric), by completing four (4) N3 Subjects, then adding Sake Afrikaans and Business English. Thereby giving you a total of 6 Subjects, which are required for a National Senior Certificate (Matric). Please note that Sake Afrikaans and Business English will only be written in November. (These 2 subjects are Open-Book Exams).

PROGRAMME OUTLINE: ELECTRICIAN

Core subjects:

  • Mathematics N3: factorisation of linear, quadratic and cubical functions; exponents and logarithms – calculations with surds and the solution of equations
  • Engineering Science N3: heat; hydraulics; electricity; chemistry
  • Electrotechnology N3: direct current generators; direct current motors, efficiency and losses; alternating current circuit

Choose ONE of the following elective subjects:

  • Engineering Drawing N3: machining symbols; dimensioning; sectioning; and isometric projection, assembly drawing and detailed drawings
  • Industrial Electronics N3: transducers; operational amplifiers; electronic power controls

PROGRAMME OUTLINE: DIESEL MECHANIC

Core subjects:

  • Diesel Trade Theory N3: helps the apprentice to gain knowledge on the working of the diesel engine, the suspension and gearbox; clutches, fuel injection, power steering and valves
  • Mathematics N3: factorisation of linear, quadratic and cubical functions; exponents and logarithms – calculations with surds and solution of equation
  • Engineering Drawing N3: machining symbols; dimensioning; sectioning; and isometric projection, assembly drawing and detailed drawings

Core subjects:

  • Engineering Science N3: heat; hydraulics; electricity; chemistry
  • Mathematics N3: factorisation of linear, quadratic and cubical functions; exponents and logarithms – calculations with surds and solution of equations
  • Mechanotechnology N3: cranes; engines; hydraulic machines; metal working
  • Engineering Drawing N3: machining symbols; dimensioning; sectioning; isometric projection, assembly drawing and detailed drawings

OR

PROGRAMME OUTLINE: MOTOR MECHANIC

Core subjects:

  • Motor Trade Theory N3: engines – valves, fuel injection and ignition; fluid clutches; gearboxes; differentials and final drives; power steering; layout of the workshop and reception
  • Mathematics N3: factorisation of linear, quadratic and cubical functions; exponents and logarithms – calculations with surds and solution of equations
  • Engineering Drawing N3: machining symbols; dimensioning; sectioning; and isometric projection, assembly drawing and detailed drawings
  • Engineering Science N3: heat; hydraulics; electricity; chemistry

OR

PROGRAMME OUTLINE: Water & Waste Water Treatment Practice

Core subjects:

  • Mathematics N3: factorisation of linear, quadratic and cubical functions; exponents and logarithms – calculations with surds and the solution of equations
  • Plant Operation Theory N3: chemistry of polymerisation, catalyst, combustion, gasification of coal, exchange of heat, heat transfer in liquids, heat exchangers, thermal insulation and steam traps, compression, refrigeration, cooling towers, instrumentation and control systems
  • Water and Waste-water Treatment Practice N3: international metric system, elementary hydraulics, pumps, valves, elementary water chemistry and biology legislation, water sources, quality and specification, pre-treatment, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, distribution systems and stabilisation and special treatment process

Choose ONE of the following elective subjects:

Course Prospects

Successful students will be able to obtain a Senior Certificate (Technical Matric) after completing four N3 subjects, then adding Sake Afrikaans and Business English. Programme Type

The Matric Senior Certificate (Technical Matric) is a National Qualification

Programme Duration

You should be able to complete in 12 months.

Entrance Requirements

Students must have completed (or be in progress with) a technical N3 course with 4 subjects.

OR

Adult learners who are 21 years and older with an incomplete Senior Certificate qualification in the year of

the Senior Certificate examination;

OR

Out of school youth 18-21 years old who could not complete their school education and could not be

accommodated longer in the school system due to special circumstances as verified by the Provincial Head of Department;

Student Assessment

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is the examining body for these courses. At the conclusion of your studies, you will have to write an external examination set by DHET. You will only be able to register to write the external examination if you pass both your formative and your summative assessment components by the registration cut-off date(s) that the College will communicate to you. The College will use the formative and summative assessment components to generate a term mark for each of your subjects.

If you pass both your formative and your summative assessment components by the specified cut-off date(s), you can then register to write your external examinations at a FET College Exam Centre. The College will assist you to fill in the examination entry form and assign you to the relevant exam centre (venue) but accepts no responsibility therefore, and the sole responsibility in respect thereof lies with the student.

You will be required to pay an examination fee at the exam centre. Please note that this examination fee is not included in your course fee.

The assessments for Sake Afrikaans and Business English are open-book exams.

It is your responsibility to check with the relevant exam centre that you have the correct dates for your examinations, BEFORE the registration cut off dates for the examinations. Please note that all exam centres have their own cut-off registration dates as per their own academic calendar and it is your responsibility to make yourself aware of and comply with those deadlines/timelines.

Certification

Upon successful completion of your required exams for each subject, you will be awarded your National Senior Certificate (Technical Matric).
